The Old Man/Devil
The Man, also possibly the devil, is described as having a grave
appearance, in his fifties and carries a cane shaped as a serpent. This Man who
bade Goodman Johnson meet him in these ominous woods claims to have been friends
with Brown's father and grandfather, who despite what Brown thought of them,
appear to be guilty of evil. Additionally the same man is discovered
at the ungodly ceremony and is revealed to be the leader of the impure
congregation. He attempts to induct Goodman brown into his cult as he prides
himself on the godly men he has been able to turn to evil
